Shear thinning and thixotropy of HMHEC and HEC water solutions

چکیده
Steady state viscosity and thixotropy of hydrophobically modified hydroxyethyl cellulose ~HMHEC! and nonassociative cellulose water solutions are studied. Although all the samples are shear thinning, only the HMHEC is thixotropic, since the migration of hydrophobes to micelles is controlled by diffusion. The Cross model fits steady state curves. The Mewis model, a phenomenological model that proposes that the rate of change of viscosity when the shear rate is suddenly changed is related to the difference between the steady state and current values of viscosity raised to an exponent, fits structure construction experiments when the exponent, n, is estimated to be around 2. The Newtonian assumption used by Mewis cannot be used here, however. This seems to be related to the fact that the thickening is due to bridged micelle formation, which is a slow process, and also to topological constraints and entanglements, which are rapid processes. The kinetic parameter was redefined to kn in order to make it independent of initial conditions. So, kn depends only on how the shear affects the structure. kn reaches a plateau at shear rates too low to produce structure destruction and decreases at higher shear rates. © 2002 The Society of Rheology. @DOI: 10.1122/1.1516789#

Flow induced by a sphere settling in an aging yield-stress fluid
We have studied the flow induced by a macroscopic spherical particle settling in a Laponite suspension that exhibits a yield-stress, thixotropy and shear-thinning. We show that the fluid thixotropy (or aging) induces an increase with time of both the apparent yield stress and shear-thinning properties but also a breaking of the flow fore-aft symmetry predicted in Hershel-Bulkley fluids (yield-s...

In this work, a stable NiFe2O4 paraffin based ferrofluid was prepared via high energy milling. The rheological properties of ferrofluid were studied. Bingham plastic, HerschelBulkley and Casson models were used to evaluate the shear stress-shear rate dependency. The ferrofluid exhibited a shear thinning behaviour for all studied magnetic field. The magneto-viscous effect and thixotropy of...
متن کاملWhen Microrheology, Bulk Rheology, and Microfluidics Meet: Broadband Rheology of Hydroxyethyl Cellulose Water Solutions
In this work, we present new insights related to a debate on the morphological structure of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) molecules when dissolved in water, i.e., whether HEC adopts a linear-flexible or a rod-like fibrillar configuration. We have employed “seven” rheological techniques to explore the viscoelastic properties of HEC solutions at different time and length scales. This work demonstr...
متن کاملSynthesis of Alumina/Polyacrylamide nanocomposite and its influence on viscosity of drilling fluid
Maybe viscosity in drilling fluid is the most important parameter because cutting removal from well are task of viscose fluid. If viscosity of fluid is less than particular value, cutting will settle down in well and drilling operation will be stopped. In this study, synthesis of Alumina/Polyacrylamide nanocomposite through solution polymerization method was performed. Rheological behavior of m...
